Did you know that 35 million people (13 of which are children) did not have access to enough food to meet their basic needs in 2006? That is almost 1 in 5 kids, and in the wealthiest country in the world, this is an absolutely startling number.
So startling in fact that celebrity chef and author, Rachel Ray, decided that she could stand by no longer. Introducing Yum-o!, a nonprofit who’s goal is to empower children and their families to develop healthy relationships with food and cooking. The 5 year old organization teaches families to cook by providing classes in local schools across the country while also offering easy and affordable recipes on their website. On top of participating with organizations like Share Our Strength in an effort to end hunger in America, Yum-o! works together with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to help kids reach their food-related career goals by funding scholarships and recognizing public schools that are offering food or nutrition programs that incorporate healthy choices.
“We formed Yum-o! to introduce more kids to cooking… and a big part of the Yum-o! organization is about making cooking and eating something that makes people happy. Food should be delicious, fun and put a smile on your face.”
