Big Apple Greeter

Many tourists are intimidated by New York’s size and unsubstantiated reputation as being dangerous and unfriendly. In 1992, Big Apple Greeter was formed as a way of connecting hospitable New Yorkers with visitors from around the world. This is a great volunteer opportunity for anyone who loves New York and enjoys meeting new people. As a greeter, you will take visitors on an informal, unscripted walk through neighborhoods you know well. The more diverse and unique the area–the better! You’ll be able to share your personal stories and favorite spots in the city. The timing is flexible but volunteers are asked to spend up to 4 daylight hours with visitors (up to 6 people) at least 12 times per year. They are particularly interested in volunteers who are bilingual or who know American Sign Language. If you are interested in volunteering, fill out an application and mail (as in snail mail) it to the address below.
