Refugee Transitions (RT) seeks to assist refugee and immigrant families living in the Bay Area by offering language and literacy mentoring, among other services geared toward building sustainable life skills. There is a great need for volunteers interested in becoming a Literacy Coach to RT’s in-home and after-school programs for adults and young students. Literacy Coaches assist with administering RT’s high-quality literacy and ESL instruction programs, academic tutoring, family support, and orientation of the Bay Area to RT participants. By strengthening these citizens’ language and literacy skills, Literacy Coaches are helping the students and their families to become confident and self-sustaining members of their local community. Volunteers must be culturally sensitive and compassionate about the diverse Bay Area community. It is not mandatory for volunteers to be bilingual, but being fluent in another language is always needed. Training is provided. Literacy Coaches must meet with their students 2-4 hours per week, and a commitment of 6 months for adult tutoring, and 9 months for youth tutoring is needed. Locations available throughout San Francisco, Oakland, and the South Bay. Help the newest citizens of the city to thrive and be active contributors to their society!
