WIDECAST (Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network) is seeking adventurous individuals to join its volunteer global expeditions with the mission of protecting the sea turtle and its natural habitats. Individuals ages 16 and up and groups are encouraged to become a part of one of WIDECAST’s various project areas, including Conservation and Research, Outreach and Public information, alternative livelihood, Building Capacity to partners, shares projects, and more. Choose from two very critical global expeditions:
Península de Osa: Volunteers will travel by boat with the WIDECAST crew to the Península de Osa, just north of Puerto Jimenez on Playa Blanca, to conduct in-water studies. Take boat trips twice a week with the project staff to study sea turtle life under water, capture Green Sea Turtles in nets for gathering samples. Work together to clean the beach, and help create a rescue center for sea turtles, a mangrove reforestation project, as well as a support of the local blue flag group.
Caribbean Coast (Project Pacuare): Venture to the north of Limón (capital of the Caribbean Province of Costa Rica), south of Parismina River. This project combines night beach patrols, hatchery work, and a rescue center for sea turtles. Volunteers will patrol the beach at night; perform hatchery shifts, beach cleaning, and maintenance work; and help at the rescue center by nursing sea turtles or cleaning tanks. The project is open year-round (February-July with Leatherback Sea Turtles, or June-November with Green and Hawksbill Sea Turtles). Even during the turtles’ non-nesting period in December-January, there are still many tasks to fulfill.
